In-Class Field Trips for Grade Two Students
How do things float?
Students have the opportunity to answer this question when they become scientists as well as carpenters in this 2 part field trip. Small groups of children will rotate through 3 different buoyancy stations while the others are building their own paddle boat.
Buoyancy stations include predicting which objects will be buoyant, discussing and experimenting with stability in a load, experimenting with boat movement and which materials are best used for boat construction.
As well as experimenting, students will have the opportunity to build their own boats in a safe, structured environment, using sandpaper and hammers.
The paddle boats (as well as their new found knowledge) are the students’ to keep after this discovery-filled field trip.
