In-Class Field Trips for Grade Three Students

What is a simple machine?

Using a “hands on” approach and working in groups, students will explore force and movement.  They will conduct experiments using rollers, wheels & axles, pulleys, inclined planes, levers, screws and wedges, gears, and small model cars.  Discussion will center on force, friction and overcoming friction, the advantage of using pulleys, and (by using examples) the difference between 1st, 2nd and 3rd class levers.  The program culminates with each group applying their knowledge and the Scientific Method to explore and evaluate the 3 different drive systems in our fun, exciting model cars.
